Expert Bamboo RemovalAcross South Wales
Professional bamboo eradication, treatment, and complete removal for residential and commercial properties. Serving Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, and all of South Wales.
Bamboo ignores boundaries and can cause serious structural damage to your property. What starts as an attractive garden feature quickly becomes an expensive nightmare.
Property Damage
Bamboo rhizomes can exploit gaps or existing cracks in foundations, damage drainage systems, crack paving and tarmac, and compromise retaining walls and garden structures.
Rapid Spread
Running bamboo can spread quickly underground through its rhizomes — the rate varies by species, site and ground conditions — quickly invading neighboring properties and causing boundary disputes.
Legal Implications
Uncontrolled bamboo can lead to legal action from neighbors, property devaluation, and complications with property sales and mortgages.
DIY Failures
Off-the-shelf herbicides and garden barriers are ineffective against bamboo. Amateur removal often spreads fragments, making the problem worse.

Residential Bamboo Crisis in Pontcanna
Pontcanna, Cardiff
The Problem
Phyllostachys aurea (Golden Bamboo) had spread over 15 metres from the original planting point, pushing through a timber fence into a neighbouring property and cracking a concrete patio. The homeowner was facing a legal dispute with their neighbour over the encroachment.
Our Solution
We carried out a full written survey, mapped the rhizome spread using trial pits, and recommended complete mechanical excavation. Our team used a 3-tonne micro excavator to remove all rhizome material to a depth of 1.2 metres. A root barrier membrane was installed along the boundary fence line.
The Result
All bamboo was fully eradicated within 2 days. The patio was re-laid and the fence replaced. We provided a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, which satisfied the neighbour's solicitor and resolved the legal dispute. No regrowth has been detected at any follow-up inspection.

Commercial Property in Swansea Enterprise Zone
Swansea Enterprise Park
The Problem
Pseudosasa japonica (Arrow Bamboo) was growing aggressively along the perimeter of a commercial unit, blocking fire exits and damaging an external drainage system. The landlord needed the issue resolved before a lease renewal inspection.
Our Solution
Due to access constraints and the proximity to underground services, we used a combined approach: selective mechanical removal where excavation was safe, and a targeted stem injection herbicide programme for areas near drainage runs. Work was scheduled outside business hours to avoid disruption.
The Result
Mechanical removal was completed in 1 day. The herbicide programme ran over 2 growing seasons with quarterly monitoring visits. The drainage system was repaired by our groundworks partner. The lease renewal inspection passed without issue. Full eradication was confirmed 18 months after treatment began.

Victorian Property Foundation Threat in Newport
Stow Hill, Newport
The Problem
Phyllostachys bissetii had been planted as a privacy screen 8 years ago and had spread underneath a Victorian-era stone wall, with rhizomes detected within 300mm of the main house foundation. A structural engineer flagged the bamboo as an urgent risk during a homebuyer survey.
Our Solution
We conducted a detailed rhizome mapping exercise with trial pits at 1-metre intervals along the foundation. All rhizome material was hand-excavated near the foundation to avoid vibration damage to the historic stonework. A 1mm HDPE root barrier was installed to 1.5m depth around the full perimeter.
The Result
Complete removal took 4 days due to the delicate hand excavation required near the foundation. No structural damage was sustained. The homebuyer survey was re-submitted with our completion certificate and insurance-backed guarantee, and the property sale proceeded.

How long does bamboo removal take?
Treatment programs typically run over 2-3 growing seasons for complete eradication. Excavation can often be completed in 1-3 days depending on the extent of the rhizome system. We'll provide a clear timeline during your free assessment.
What is the difference between running and clumping bamboo?
Running bamboo (like Phyllostachys) sends out underground rhizomes that can spread quickly. Spread varies by species and growing conditions. Running bamboo can spread quickly through rhizomes; an assessment can map the actual extent on your property. Clumping bamboo grows in tight clusters and is generally less invasive. Most problematic bamboo in South Wales is the running variety.
Can I remove bamboo myself?
We strongly advise against DIY bamboo removal. Incomplete removal often makes the problem worse by spreading rhizome fragments. Professional equipment and expertise are essential to reduce the risk of regrowth.
Will bamboo damage my property foundation?
Running bamboo can exploit gaps or existing cracks in hard surfaces, walls and drains. The site-specific risk depends on the species, spread, ground conditions and condition of the structure. A survey establishes what is actually happening at your property.
Do you offer guarantees?
Where appropriate, we can offer a written treatment or removal guarantee, including insurance-backed options. Eligibility, term and exclusions depend on the method and the site, so we confirm what is available after the survey.
Are your treatments safe for pets and children?
We use HSE-approved professional herbicides and follow strict safety protocols. We'll advise you on any necessary precautions and waiting periods to ensure the safety of your family and pets.
How quickly can you respond to my bamboo problem?
We offer same-day assessments across South Wales and emergency callouts are available. Contact us and we'll arrange a visit at the earliest convenience.
What happens to the bamboo after removal?
All bamboo material is properly disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations. We ensure no rhizome fragments are left behind that could cause regrowth.
Are you PCA registered?
Yes, we are fully registered with the Property Care Association (PCA), the UK's leading trade association for specialist property care. This ensures we meet the highest industry standards.
How can I tell if I have running bamboo?
Look for canes or shoots appearing away from the main stand with bare ground in between, then dig a shallow trench 30–60cm outside the stand. Long, pale, segmented rhizomes travelling horizontally point to a running species; a congested mass of short, upward-turning rhizomes directly beneath the canes points to a clumping one. Our identification guide sets out all the checks.
What are the most invasive bamboo species in the UK?
Running species in the Phyllostachys genus — especially Phyllostachys aurea (Golden Bamboo) and Phyllostachys nigra (Black Bamboo) — plus Pseudosasa japonica and Sasa palmata account for most UK removal work. Clumping Fargesia species are far less likely to cause boundary problems. Bamboo is not listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Can bamboo grow through concrete?
Not through sound, unbroken concrete. Rhizomes exploit expansion joints, slab edges, service entry points and existing cracks, then thicken as they grow, which can widen those defects and lift paving or block paving. How much of a risk this is depends on the construction and condition of the surface.
Can bamboo damage house foundations?
Bamboo can exploit gaps or existing cracks in foundations, walls and drains rather than creating openings in sound structures. Whether damage occurs at a particular property depends on the species, how far the rhizome network has spread, ground conditions and the condition of the structure — which is exactly what a survey establishes.
Can bamboo grow underneath a house?
Rhizomes can travel through soil beneath a suspended floor or a slab, usually by following an air brick, a service entry, a slab edge or an existing crack, rather than boring through sound concrete or intact masonry. Whether it has happened at a particular property is a matter for inspection.
How close to a house is it safe to plant bamboo?
There is no statutory minimum distance. We would avoid planting running species such as Phyllostachys in open ground near a house, boundary, drain run or patio at all; clumping Fargesia species, a large container, or a fully lined raised bed are far easier to keep under control near a building.
Can bamboo cause subsidence?
Bamboo is a shallow-rooted grass and we are not aware of authoritative UK evidence establishing it as a typical cause of foundation subsidence. Indirect routes exist, such as rhizomes worsening a drain leak, so new or progressive cracking should be diagnosed by a structural engineer or chartered surveyor rather than attributed to bamboo.
Can bamboo damage a patio or driveway?
Yes. Rhizomes travel through bedding sand and sub-base and emerging shoots can lift blocks and slabs, while a rhizome inside an existing crack thickens and can widen it. Block paving, gravel and slabs on sand are most affected; well-laid reinforced concrete in good condition is more resistant.
Does bamboo reduce property value?
Not automatically — bamboo has no statutory status in the UK and no fixed valuation penalty. Value is more often affected by uncertainty: visible spread, apparent damage, an unresolved boundary issue, or no survey and no plan, because buyers and valuers discount for unknowns.
Will bamboo affect my mortgage?
Lender requirements vary and each lender applies its own criteria, so no outcome can be promised. Bamboo is not covered by the specific knotweed policies many lenders operate, but a valuer may still comment on significant bamboo near a building and request a specialist report, or a plan with an insurance-backed guarantee.
Can I sell a house with invasive bamboo?
Yes. There is no legal bar on selling and no requirement to remove bamboo first. What matters is answering the property information form honestly, documenting any works, and having a survey or plan in writing if a surveyor or valuer raises it.
Do I have to declare bamboo when selling a house?
There is no bamboo-specific question on the TA6 form as there is for Japanese knotweed, but you must not answer the form misleadingly. Any complaint, dispute, known damage or works should be disclosed, and your conveyancer should advise on the exact wording.
Will a surveyor flag bamboo?
Possibly. A basic mortgage valuation is limited, but a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey involves a fuller inspection, and established bamboo close to a building, boundary or drain run is reasonably often noted with a recommendation for specialist investigation.
Is bamboo damage covered by home insurance?
Usually not under a standard buildings policy. Most wordings exclude damage by plants and roots and damage that happens gradually, and bamboo damage develops over seasons. Policy wordings differ, so check your own policy and ask your insurer. Legal expenses cover is often the more useful section in boundary cases.
My neighbour's bamboo is growing into my garden – what can I do?
Photograph and date the spread, get a specialist survey establishing the source and extent, write to your neighbour factually, and cut back encroaching rhizomes on your own side to limit further spread. If they will not engage, take independent legal advice; encroachment is a civil matter, usually private nuisance.
Who pays to remove a neighbour's bamboo?
Work on your own land is at your own cost, and removing the source on their land needs their agreement or a court order. A neighbour can in principle be liable in private nuisance for loss caused by encroachment, but recovering costs depends on evidence; a negotiated split is the most common outcome.
Can I make my neighbour remove their bamboo?
Not directly — there is no statutory duty to remove bamboo. The route is written notice with dated evidence, a specialist survey, a costed proposal, mediation, then a solicitor's letter and, as a last resort, a court order requiring abatement and damages.
Can I sue my neighbour for invasive bamboo?
You can bring a civil claim, usually in private nuisance, seeking an injunction or damages. Success depends on evidence that the bamboo originates on their land, that encroachment is occurring, that they were notified, and that real loss has been suffered. Take independent legal advice first.
Is a neighbour liable for bamboo damage?
Potentially, in private nuisance, where they knew or ought to have known of the risk and encroachment has caused loss. It is not automatic: the damage must be attributable to the bamboo rather than to pre-existing defects, ground conditions or other causes.
Can the council force someone to remove bamboo?
There is no bamboo-specific enforcement power. Where there is a persistent detrimental effect on quality of life, a council or the police may use a Community Protection Notice under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, but a written warning is required first and it is at their discretion.
Can I cut bamboo roots coming into my garden?
Generally yes. The common-law right of abatement allows you to cut back encroaching roots and shoots up to the boundary line. You must not trespass, damage your neighbour's property or destroy the plant on their land, and cut material should be offered back rather than thrown over the fence.
Can I install a bamboo barrier along my neighbour's boundary?
You can install a vertical root barrier on your own land just inside the boundary without permission, provided the work stays on your side and does not damage a shared fence or wall. Rhizomes already on your side must be excavated first, or the barrier simply contains the problem with you.
What is the best bamboo root barrier?
A purpose-made HDPE rhizome barrier, typically around 0.75–1mm or heavier for established infestations, with a smooth face, sealed overlapping joints and enough height to stand proud of ground level for inspection. Weed membrane, landscape fabric and damp-proof course offcuts are not adequate. Correct depth depends on species and ground conditions, so a survey should come first.
Does a bamboo root barrier actually work?
Correctly specified and installed, yes — for containment. A barrier stops rhizomes crossing a line but is not a removal method, and it does nothing about rhizomes already on the protected side, which must be excavated first. Most failures come from thin material, insufficient depth, unsealed joints, gaps at ends and services, or never inspecting it.
How much does a bamboo root barrier cost?
Quality HDPE material is roughly £15–£25 per linear metre, and professional supply and installation commonly runs £50–£150 per linear metre depending on depth, access, soil and obstructions. A typical 10–15m boundary is often £500–£1,200 installed. We quote after a site visit rather than by the metre.
Can bamboo grow underneath a root barrier?
It can where the barrier is too shallow for the site or the ground offers an easy route — loose or previously disturbed ground, service trenches, old drain runs or decayed root channels. A barrier taken below the local rhizome network to firm, undisturbed ground, with a properly compacted trench, is very difficult to pass beneath.
Can bamboo grow over a root barrier?
Yes, and this is the more common failure. Rhizomes meeting a smooth vertical face are deflected upward and will crest a barrier finished flush with the ground, then continue hidden under turf, mulch or gravel. The barrier should stand proud by roughly 5–10cm, be kept clear of soil and mulch, and be inspected at least annually.
