Bamboo Excavation and Rhizome Removal in South Wales

Excavation physically removes the bamboo rhizome network rather than waiting for it to die. It is the fastest route to a bamboo-free site and the usual choice when rhizomes have reached paving, walls or drains, when a property sale is pending, or when the ground is to be re-used. We carry out excavations across South Wales with our own operatives and equipment.
What an excavation involves
- Survey and mark-out — the rhizome extent is mapped first so the dig covers the whole network, including runners beyond the visible stand.
- Cane removal — canes and foliage are cut and removed separately from the soil.
- Dig and screen — soil is excavated to the depth of the rhizome mat (commonly the top 30–60 cm, deeper where the ground has allowed it) and either screened on site to recover clean soil or removed with the rhizome.
- Disposal — rhizome-bearing material leaves site for appropriate disposal; see how excavated bamboo is disposed of.
- Backfill and finish — the excavation is backfilled and left level and tidy.
What is and is not included
We dispose of the arisings and backfill. We do not currently reinstate lawns, planting, fencing or hard landscaping — the site is handed back clean and level for your landscaper or builder. Where a boundary is shared with a neighbouring stand, a root barrier can be installed along the excavation edge on request.
Regrowth and follow-up
Any viable rhizome fragment left in the ground can shoot again, which is why the mark-out and screening stages matter. We revisit after the first growing season and treat any regrowth under the programme. Our guide on why bamboo grows back after removal explains what to look for.
Cost, access and guarantees
Price is driven by area, rhizome depth, access for machinery, haulage distance and disposal volume — the bamboo excavation cost guide gives worked examples by area. On qualifying excavations a written guarantee is available, with insurance-backed cover of up to 10 years on request; eligibility and exclusions are confirmed after survey.
