Bamboo in Spring: What to Expect & Warning Signs to Watch For

Spring is the most critical time of year for bamboo. As soil temperatures rise above 10°C — typically from late March in South Wales — dormant rhizomes burst into life, sending up new shoots at astonishing speed. If you have bamboo on or near your property, spring is when you'll see the true extent of the problem.

What Happens Underground in Spring

Bamboo's rhizome network has been storing energy all winter. When spring arrives, that energy is channelled into rapid vertical growth. Running bamboo species like Phyllostachys can push new culms (shoots) up at a rate of 10–30 cm per day. These shoots often emerge several metres from the visible clump, revealing just how far the underground network has spread during the previous year.

Early Warning Signs to Watch For

Look for these tell-tale indicators from late March onwards:

  • New shoots appearing in unexpected locations — in borders, lawns, gravel, or even through tarmac and paving
  • Pointed tips pushing through soil — bamboo shoots are conical and can be mistaken for asparagus
  • Cracking in paths, patios, or render — rhizomes exert enormous lateral pressure
  • Lifting of fence panels or wall footings — a sign that rhizomes have reached structures

Why Spring Is the Best Time to Act

Counterintuitively, spring's rapid growth makes it the ideal window for herbicide treatment. When bamboo is actively growing, it draws herbicide down into the rhizome network far more effectively than during dormancy. A spring treatment can reach parts of the root system that would be inaccessible later in the year.

What You Should Do Right Now

Walk your boundaries. Check neighbouring gardens. Inspect paths, patios, and the base of walls for new growth. If you spot bamboo shoots appearing where they shouldn't be, do not cut them — this stimulates further growth. Instead, call a PCA-registered specialist for a free assessment. Early intervention in spring can save thousands in removal costs later.
